What do I need to wear for physiotherapy?

You should dress comfortably, in loose fitting clothes. Your therapist will need to see the affected body part in order to assess and treat it, therefore if it is your lower limbs that are affected please bring shorts. For back problems, the therapist may require you to remove your top.

How many sessions of physiotherapy do I need?

There are no set numbers of treatments for a condition; every patient is an individual. Following your first appointment, your physiotherapist will discuss with you the predicted number of treatments you will require based on your assessment. You will be constantly re-assessed each time you have an appointment and if your progress plateaus or there is no improvement being made then your treatment will be altered as necessary or you may be referred to a specialist.

Do I have to be referred by a doctor?

No, you do not need to be referred by a doctor. Anybody can refer themselves for treatment, however, if you would like to use your medical insurance to claim back treatment costs, some policies ask that your GP would authorize this.

    Who benefits from physiotherapy?

Treatment helps patients of all ages to reduce or alleviate pain, improve movement and allow the body to function as best as possible. Restoring normal alignment and posture prevents recurrence and allows for as rapid a recovery as possible.

Should I stop playing sports if I have sustained an injury?

Get expert advice from our specialist physiotherapists as to when or how long you will need to rest, work or play.

    What is electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy is a broad term including interferential and ultrasound treatments. This involves the use of electrical waves of energy that affect tissues by reducing pain, swelling and muscle spasm and hence promotes healing.

Should I bring medical notes and X-rays with me?

Any relevant information about your condition will help the physiotherapist make an informed assessment therefore if you have any x-rays or medical notes on hand that would be beneficial.

Is physiotherapy treatment appropriate for back and neck problems?

Qualified physiotherapists are trained to treat all problems with the spine including the back and neck. A large percentage of a physiotherapist's workload is spent treating neck and back problems.

Will I be expected to do anything in between treatment sessions?

We work with you to ensure that you get the most out of your physiotherapy and to reduce any chances of any relapse. Therefore, you will be given lots of things to do and think about during the week. How much you do between treatment sessions is just as important as your treatment session itself.

    Can a physiotherapist manipulate?

Yes, all qualified physiotherapists with the necessary manipulation qualification can manipulate.
